[SOLVED] EDID wrong, monitor not working with DVI anymore

I've had the system up for a week or so, rebooted and the monitor f#@k%! up. First thing I noticed was that grub was not in 1920x1080 but 800x600 or some such, after which it would stop displaying anything on DVI. Fortunately VGA works so I was able to get some info.

everything.log says:

Checking the logs I've had the Raw EDID notices for an age and an eternity (kernel log 97MB !) but never the last line.

Googling got me onto i2c-tools. After a modprobe I get the following:

toad@deskarch 1006\8 ~ > sudo i2cdetect -l
i2c-0 i2c nouveau-0000:07:00.0-2 I2C adapter

i2c-3 i2c nouveau-0000:07:00.0-1 I2C adapter
i2c-4 smbus SMBus I801 adapter at 0400 SMBus adapter

Both i2c-1 and i2c-3 have port 50 available and now I don't know which one to take.

So here my questions: Am I on the right track? Do you know of any good articles/wiki entries for EDID related problems? What could have been the cause of this?

Oh, and PLEASE HELP smile !!!

Re: [SOLVED] EDID wrong, monitor not working with DVI anymore

This may be similar to the problem I'm having at the moment that I thought was to do with twinview. However I'm using the proprietary nvidia drivers.

The problem only seems to happen with vga 1280x1024 monitors and I have no idea what update broke it. I've been googling all morning to no avail.

In my case I get a display but it starts halfway across the monitor and carries on off the edge.

Re: [SOLVED] EDID wrong, monitor not working with DVI anymore

I was also thinking about the driver at first but my last nouveau update was on 28th November and I have rebooted since - successfully. fwiw my monitor is a 27" with a 1920x1080 resolution and while VGA does work, DVI doesn't (contrary to your experience).

BTW, like your signature, should nick it wink

Interesting. I've been looking through the recent package updates and can find nothing related to X or monitors, that I use, that has been updated since my last successful boot.

Feel free. smile

EDIT: My thread is here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1026187

Near the bottom is a list of all packages that have been updated since my last successful boot. If you can look through your pacman log and find what packages we've both updated it might get up a smaller list of possible breakages.

EDIT: SOLVED!!!!!...... but I have no idea how or why. I played about with my xorg.conf a lot and did several reboots and it seems to be fixed. I'll do some more testing to see if I can find what caused the problem and how I fixed it as this is going to bug me all day.

Re: [SOLVED] EDID wrong, monitor not working with DVI anymore

I hate those automagic fixes like the bleeding plague. Nice though.

Actually, I put a DVI to VGA adapter on my graphic card feeding the VGA cable into the monitor and now I can have the beamer on VGA and the monitor on DVI to VGA to VGA if that makes sense. Whatever, it works...

However, the alarming EDID messages have not gone away. Could it be hardware kissing a slow but certain good-bye?

llawwehttam - have you checked your logs?

Whatever, any idea as to the cause of those blasted EDID log entries would be more than welcome smile

Re: [SOLVED] EDID wrong, monitor not working with DVI anymore

there may be a fix for your problem :
search the net and find the edid of your monitor, put CustomEDID in your xorg.conf or 10-monitor.conf.

Re: [SOLVED] EDID wrong, monitor not working with DVI anymore

Cool, thanks, chancho. A quick google has not provided me with the EDID for my Benq M2700HD but I've written to Benq. Let's see whether their customer service department is worthy of its name.

Re: [SOLVED] EDID wrong, monitor not working with DVI anymore

Many thanks. How/where did you get the info you posted?

I've cooked up the following:

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Benq M2700HD"
        DisplaySize 600 x 340
        HorizSync 24-83
        VertRefresh 50-76
        Option "DPMS"
        Modeline "1920x1080" 148,500 1920 2448 2492 2640 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync
EndSection

Won't log out now but will try it soonish.

EDIT:

I restarted kdm and still no DVI - shame.

can you post your xorg.conf and  Xorg.0.log with option modedebug true
i found the info with google search "m2700hd edid" and found it in a ru site.

Re: [SOLVED] EDID wrong, monitor not working with DVI anymore

Thanks for the info smile

1 - I don't have an xorg.conf
2 - after a reboot X failed to start with 10-monitor.conf
3 - dealing with this issue on an Xorg level appears to be no good anyway 'cos I don't see the computer starting/boot messages et al

As I haven't got a clue what the EDID looks like I can only guess that it is at the end of the data you posted. Will work out how to get computer and monitor to handshake from that and get back, but first things first - got to make the bank manager happy/'kin matrix...

Re: [SOLVED] EDID wrong, monitor not working with DVI anymore

how do you know the 10-monitor.conf is not working.
i am not an exprert on edid, but you can try to write the "raw data" in a file by a hex editor.
you can test it by using the "read-edid" programs from AUR.
ps. post you Xorg.0.log and see if we can find out something.

Re: [SOLVED] EDID wrong, monitor not working with DVI anymore

SOLVED smile

Finally got a new graphic card, a GeForce GT520. Fine piece of machinery, passively cooled and should last the next ten years. Only downside is it didn't do wobbly windows on nouveau and as we all know, life without wobbly windows is not worth living. Oh well, nvidia it is then...

Anyway, monitor can now run on VGA, DVI and HDMI so things are pretty sweet. No lengthy logs no more and no EDID messages. Weyhey.
