Microphone input is coming out of speakers - how to stop it?

I have a generic setup with 2.1 speakers and a headset mic input.

I am using ALSA and everything is working fine, except the input to my microphone is being played through my speakers. I have tried messing around with practically everything in alsamixer but I can't seem to stop it.

Recording from the mic still works fine. I'm getting pretty sick of hearing my own voice repeated back to me! Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help is appreciated.

It seems that the microphone is not muted as a playback device. Try gnome-alsamixer. It is the same than alsa mixed, but it gives me a clearer view of what you can change in your soundcard.
