Uninstalling vino...

Hi,

Simple question: I use XFCE (Gnome is still in there, somewhere) and have Vino/Vinagre on my system. I never remote connect, what is the direct danger of removing Vino/Vinagre? Can I remove (parts of) Gnome too? My disk is flooding, and I dont plan to use Gnome anymore anyway...

Thanks

Thor

Re: Uninstalling vino...

If this package is not required by any other package, go ahead and remove it.
They "weight" just a couple MB (on their own, don't know about the dependencies) so removing them won't help much in terms of recovered space.

Re: Uninstalling vino...

Thanks for the info...I just dropped from 1.2Gb to a mere 500Mb, I issued a Pacman -Scc but to no avail...I even consider removing Gnome itself, as I dont use is (anymore) anyway...but, will that kill the system? I use the GDM to log in...

Re: Uninstalling vino...

It won't kill the system -- if you do it right.  If you use gdm, use pacman to install it -- That will make its status indicate that it was explicitly installed.  Then, uninstall whatever it was you used to explicitly install Gnome.  To see what has been explicitly installed on your system, use pacman -Qet

After that, you can remove everything from yur system that has not been explicitly installed that are not dependencies of things still installed (they had been installed as a dependency, but no longer are).  To find them, use pacman - Qdt

Review that list -- If is correct, use sudo pacman -R $(pacman-Qetq)

Re: Uninstalling vino...

Thanks, So, I use "pacman -R [package]" look for dependencies and delete that is it has none...
It's just weird I plunged from 1.2 Gb to just under 500Mb.
I just considered a reinstall, but the filesystem partition only. So the data/home partition should be spared, is that feasable?

Re: Uninstalling vino...

'pacman -R [package]' will remove just the [package], it will leave the dependencies.

Re: Uninstalling vino...

@ Karol, indeed, but it will block the other way round, if you remove a package that is needed by something else...that's where Pacman really comes into the shine smile

But, perhaps a reinstall is called for, I still drag the Gnome stuff with me. Of course, the latest updates have greatly altered the original system, what could explain some things.

I did a sniff tru the system and did'nt find anything weird (stuff that I did'nt expect to be there)...so, the system is clean, just under-spaced...
