Mouse can't move beyond boundary of laptop screen on external monitor

I'm trying to switch to using an external monitor using the following:

xrandr --output LVDS1 --off --output VGA1 --auto --size 1920x1080

My display and window manager (awesome) seem to be expanding to the new screen size properly, but my mouse can't move beyond a 1280x800 (the size of my laptop screen) field from the top left corner. What am I supposed to do to make my mouse realize the proper mouse dimensions?
