DVD playing problems: "libdvdread: Error cracking CSS key"

I'm having troubles playing a DVD I borrowed from the library.  When I use mplayer or xine to try to play it, I get output in the terminal like this:

$ mplayer dvd://1
MPlayer SVN-r34426-4.6.2 (C) 2000-2011 MPlayer Team
181 audio & 384 video codecs
mplayer: could not connect to socket
mplayer: No such file or directory

There are 16 titles on this DVD.

I see other posts relating to setting the region code or making the drive ignore region codes, but I don't know whether this is my problem.  One post says no software can decrypt a DVD if the problem is a region code since that's hardware.  However, the vobs dvd::rip produces work just fine.  I don't want to rip the DVD; I just want to play it, and I sure don't want take the time to rip the disk, watch the vobs (which don't show the correct time and aren't split at nice places), then delete the files.

For those of you who skipped all that: Mplayer and xine can't play the disc "libdvdread: Error cracking CSS key" but dvd::rip can rip it.  How can I play the disk with mplayer or xine?

Moderator comment:  I am in the United States.  Onexused, I have reason to believe you are too.  As such, I caution that this thread may quickly run afoul of the DMCA.  When it does, this thread will be closed.

I am afraid that the help from these forums is likely to be limited in its scope.  You might have better luck finding that what for which you are searching on a server in a free country.
