Hello all,
It's probably not only related to laptops but I guess wifi questions are strongly related to them.
I did a fresh install of Archlinux few days ago but I still have wifi deconnection every 5 minutes. I don't know exactly why, but in the documentation related to netcfg, there is an advice about this behavior : here. I tried but it doesn't seem to work.
I give some information about my installation and hope that it will be ok.
System : Archlinux 64 bits, Xmonad, netcfg with a menu at the boot time.
lspci (only the line related to wireless connection) :
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection
lsmod (here I put everything because maybe there is a conflict somewhere...) :
[redfire@rlaptop ~]$ lsmod

Hello redfire,
maybe the signal quality from the router is just not good enough.
When you have a connection you can do a basic check by
iwconfigYour lsmod looks fine to me, maybe someone else sees something.
You can also check the logfile, if there is a message about why the disconnect happens
sudo less /var/log/everything.log | grep wlan0Thats of course if your wifi interface is wlan0. If unsure about an error or disconnection entry, post it here.
If the connection breaks down while your notebook is idle, another issue might be that the wifi card is put into power-save mode (e.g. by one of the notebook modules you have loaded). But I don't know the card, so thats just an idea.
Also you can check, if the firmware for your card gets loaded correctly (same as above but grep firmware).

Hello and thank you for your answer.
Finally, I chose wicd instead of netcfg few hours before your post because I discovered that there was a command line and curses interface. And it works perfectly.
If I have more time, I will give another chance to netcfg...
Thank you :-)

Ok, great if that solved it .. If you try netcfg again sometime, give the wifi-select package a try then also, neat little program to configure the wifis on the command line.

I will :-)
