Headless and thin clients

Hello,
I have recently dabbled in a vnc setup. I have one computer that I use regularly. On that computer I have vncserver configured with a x session running for another user in the house. She accesses the x session on a Arch box with vnc client. The point of all that was to keep all the important data on one computer. Anyway, I am thinking about expanding on that idea here. I am considering the practicality of a headless server, and then having all "thin" clients access the server. How thin of an Arch installation can I create on the clients? Do the thin clients still need X (I guess so) Does anyone else have such a configuration? I'm sure there are other questions that I should be asking, or details on what I want to accomplish, but maybe this is enough to get the conversation started...
