MP3 Support [Solved]

Hello,
I am trying to get mp3 support. SMplayer will play mp3's, but banshee will not...this is the list of gstreamer plugins currently installed.

gstreamer0.10-bad-plugins
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
gstreamer0.10-good-plugins
gstreamer0.10-ugly-plugins

I love computers, networking and Arch Linux. Sometimes I might ask a stupid question, but please have grace with me like I would with you.

Re: MP3 Support [Solved]

looks like you're missing:
gstreamer0.10-base-plugins

For being overly complete, you can install the entire gstreamer plugins group like so:

$ sudo pacman -Syy
$ sudo pacman -S gstreamer0.10-plugins

This will give you a choise of plugin members to install, simply hitting enter will install all of them.

If this doesn't solve the issue, please start banshee from terminal with the --debug option to catch any output:

$ banshee --debug

Please post the --debug results here.

You should also try this:

$ gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:///home/username/file.mp3

Again, please also post the output of that here.

Re: MP3 Support [Solved]

gstreamer0.10-base-plugins are a dependency for banshee so they should be installed already.

try to play one of the mp3's it's not playing directly through GStreamer like so:

$ gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:///home/username/file.mp3

and tell us the result + post the output.

Re: MP3 Support [Solved]

hello pal. for mp3 support, if you want listen, I use XMMS or VLC. Don't need plugin

but Gstreamer (all) works fine to me. But remember that some kind of mp3 not all plugins are capable to read. some of them, ieg, aren't mp3, but has this extension

I know Audacious won't play mp3's without libmpg123 try installing that and see if it works for you.

Re: MP3 Support [Solved]

Yes,
I know XMMS and VLC work great, but they do not offer ipod support. I had my wife try Nightingale, Rythombox and Banshee and she liked banshee out of the three because it was the easiest use. with Rythombox also .m4a formats were not working where as banshee they were. It seems that the .mp3 files are very isolated as to which ones are not working, so I will consider this solved. I pulled all of her music off of her ipod which she has had for a very long time I do not wish to screw up her music.

I expect the isolated mp3s to be either DRM protected, stream corrupted or have corrupt / illegal tags. You could do the gstreamer play I suggested above to rule out Banshee, but you seem happy with the current state of things.

Lastly, I want to suggest clementine to you. I uses the same audio back-end as Banshee and offer similar features in a (imo) slightly better user interface.

It has mobile device support:
http://code.google.com/p/clementine-pla … bleDevices

and it will play audio in mp4 containers. Note that it doesn't play video, it's a music player.

good luck, and don't forget to mark the topic as [SOLVED] (just edit your first post's title)

Re: MP3 Support [Solved]

Googling for the same problem brought me to this thread.

The plugin that works for me is:

sudo pacman -S gst-plugins-ugly

It looks like gstreamer0.10 is legacy now.  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GStreamer
