Need help increasing boot performance.

I followed the suggestions in the wiki article on improving boot performance, but my time is still around 35-40 seconds. Two steps in particular seem to take a while: "Loading initial ramdisk" and "Waiting for UDev uevents to be processed". I'm guessing the first one has something to do with mkinitcpio, but I'm unclear how to optimize it. What should I do, and where I can get more information about increasing boot speed?
