who works with java?

A friend of mine was telling me how just about every app the isp he works for is designing lately, they've been doing in java. Now this got me curious because I havent' seen much on java for the past year. I'm just curious, if you work with java, what kind of apps do you tend to create with it?

Re: who works with java?

I'm writing programs to interface with microcomputers and provide a frontend to them. Currently I'm using Java 1.5, but as I go through this C++ book, I'm considering a switch.

Re: who works with java?

Java is pretty much the top language for server side applications, I think because of its high quality threading (it can serve many clients easily). It also seems to be the language of choice for all business applications lately. But that's just because some idiots in a suit heard the name 'java' and decided it was cool, IMNSHO.

You probably haven't heard much about it because a) Its not overly popular for desktop programs yet b) the apps that use it just use it without bragging about it and c) its not overly popular in open source. But it seems to be getting bigger.

To answer your question about what kind of apps I personally create, check the signature.

It's growing at a good rate. It's being hinder in OSS because of the reliance on a closed-JVM. However, Java is now the 2nd most common language in use on SourceForge, which is a good indication of its acceptance within the OSS community (it's still behind C++)

Re: who works with java?

I'm not exactly a Java snob. I'm really weird about it actually. I think I'm actually a Python snob, I think Python is a better language... and yet, I program in Java and Groovy. Why? I don't understand my motivation. What is wrong with me!?

Ok, maybe don't answer that. lol.

Re: who works with java?

OT: I've been thinking about writing a server side rss aggregator in python, similar to Feed-on-Feeds, which is php based.
It shouldn't be to hard using the feeparser module (which is awesome, by the way) - I've been looking at Spyce for this, because Zope and the other things like that suck.

Re: who works with java?

i'll say that python smokes java easily on the desktop but as dusty said before, java smokes python on the server,
eventually python will probably get there and make java totally obsolete because as we all know oss wins,

and java is also waaaay ahead in the embedded market even though i heard that python is coming to mobiles also,

arch + gentoo + initng + python = enlisy

Re: who works with java?

Python's actually not too shabby. I did some work on it making a log parser for everquest2. Its really easy to learn and work with, but after being introduced to ruby, I kinda dropped python in favor of yellow fever.

#edit

Also, thank you for your opinions smile . I was learning c#.net, but after a while my natural paranoia concernign anything ms kinda turned me off to it. Also I just wasn't digging it  :? .

Any up to date online java texts I can look into?
