Printing issue: /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed for HP P1102

Hi all,

five days ago was the last time I (successfully) used my printer, a HP LaserJet Professional P1102. The next time I needed it was today, but to my suprise, printing didn't work. Since I never had any problems with this device before and since I didn't change any configuration settings in the last five days, I didn't really know where to start investigating the failure.

I started with the obvious things:

I checked that the power cable of the printer is plugged in.
I checked that the usb cable is properly connected to the printer on one end and to the computer on the other.
I opened the browser and checked the printer status via the cups web interface (http://localhost:631/printers/P1102). - Result: The printer status was stated as "/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed"

I tried the suggested solution (changing "SystemGroup sys root" to "SystemGroup lp root"). After that I stopped and started the cups daemon to make the change take effect. But that didn't help, printing still did not work and the error message stayed the same.
Then I deleted the failed print jobs and restarted the printer device using the cups web interface. Unfortunately, the error again remained the same.

I have run out of ideas now. Maybe someone can gain some useful information from the following log file (/var/log/cups/error_log):

Hi again,

some more googling and desperately trying many different approaches to solve the problem finally led to the following change of device permissions:

cd /dev/bus/usb/002/
chmod a+rw *

After that, I was able to print again.

Two questions remaining:

What caused the problem? (It was working until five days ago and I did not change anything.)
I guess the effect of the workaround described above lasts only until the next reboot. How can I solve the problem permanently?

Any help appreciated.

Just wanted to chime in and say this is affecting me too, but chmod'ing allowed me to print. THANK YOU!

My printer is an HP PSC 750 under Arch x64 (with Gnome 3). I tried all the solutions you talked about in the first post as well as trying to make a custom udev rule (as outlined in the ArchWiki) to automatically correct the permissions. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I could not get that solution or any of the others to work.

I don't know whether or not this may be related, but I've also noticed in the last few weeks that other usb devices (like thumbdrives) stop auto-mounting after several sleep/resume cycles on my desktop/ They are still recognized by lsusb, but they fail to show up in Nautilus. I have not tried manually mounting. Perhaps there's some kind of more widespread bug affecting usb permissions?

Any help is much appreciated.

Oh shit, I have the same problem again: I urgently need to print something and the printer doesn't work. The worst thing is: My solution from last time (post #2 of this thread) does not work this time. :-(

Hi,

I have the same printer at home, had similar issues until a while back. (/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed)

I solved this by permanently de-activating the smartinstall "feature" that HP has added to this model. In brief this amazing "functionality" makes the printer report itself as a virtual USB CDROM containing drivers for proprietary OSs, but it seems to make the detection of the printer more problematic under linux. You can read more about this and how to permanently de-activate it, which I'm afraid requires you to use software on the original CD (actual CD that comes with the printer, not the smartinstall one this time), in windows, here :

I had the same problem with my P1102. I did some USB sniffing and I've managed to disable the Smart Install 'feature' using the usb_modeswitch utility instead of the windows SIUtility.exe tool. After issuing the command you need to power cycle the printer, usb reset isn't enough.

If you decode those byte sequences, you'll see HTTP requests with xml content going over USB.
I still haven't figured out how to make the fake CD go away automatically, as the windows driver does. It is not as easy as with the SIUtility.exe tool. The driver does not seem to use the same protocol as the utility.

Once you've got smartinstall de-activated, things should get easier. One last thing, which you might know already, is that the printer has to have its firmware uploaded on every start. I use the normal hplip package plus hplip-plugin from AUR (which provides said firmware). An alternative is to use the hp-setup programme that comes with the regular hplip package.

If this doesn't help, let me know. After a few hours of fighting --not happy with hp about this-- I got this model to work smoothly. Can give you more info if you need it.

thanks for your anwser. Of course, I disabled "HP Smart Install" on the day I bought the printer and I've been using hplip and hp-setup from the start. Printing with this device worked like a charm for more than a year.

Then all of a sudden, the problem described in the first post popped up. It seems to be some kind of permission problem, but I don't know what caused it (as I did not change any system configuration) or how to solve it.

Hmmm, sorry for long and useless post, I didn't read yours thoroughly enough.

I don't have any permission issue on a fully up to date system. I thought this might be kernel related since I compile my own and am still on 3.1, but I booted to stock kernel and printing still works. I haven't done the suggested change to cupsd.conf.

This is rather trivial, but I still get the "...backend/hp failed" error when I send a job to the printer before turning it on. When this happens, all I need to to is pause and resume the printer in the cups web backend, not sure why, but I think it re-uploads the firmware to the printer or something.

Thank you. The chmod did the trick.

However, I also stumbled into the same problem since I cannot make the permission change persistent. I don't think changing permission manually for each reboot is the most practical solution. There might be a couple of udev tricks that I could utilize to automate the process.
