MPlayer enforcing software scaling on live DVB

If I simply run

$ mplayer dvb://ITV4

I get a frozen, jumpy picture, but if I dump the stream to disk first

$ mplayer -dumpstream dvb://ITV4

it plays perfectly from there. I can even run two instances of mplayer simultaneously, one dumping, one playing, so it's not a case of inadequate hardware grunt (which would be pretty surprising these days, anyway). Turns out it's using software scaling for dvb:// (without being asked) but not for MPEG streams dumped from the same source. The -vf-clr option doesn't help.

Bug? Or is there a good reason for it? And can I stop it?

(To be honest, I don't really intend using my DVB card for live TV anyway, but it's annoying me.)

Edit: Okay, after a reboot or two, it's now playing smoothly. For some reason. But it's still using software scaling for live TV, and not for files on disk. Which still annoying me, so I'm not marking this [SOLVED] just yet.
