java and alsa

I've managed to get dmix and alsa working for nearly everything, the problem I have is that java refuses to play nicely.  I've heard that java ignores .asroundrc, so the dmix settings won't get picked up.  I've tried aoss /path/to/java/program but still no luck.

Any ideas?
