Still having the mplayer2 package installed, I finally looked into seeing why I hadn't seen an update for mplayer2 in awhile. Turns out, the package was removed from the official repositories.
Would anyone care to elaborate why?

The package isn't broken. It currently works out of the box with up-to-date ffmpeg despite being libav based. The AUR mplayer2-lite-git package proves this. They are still being actively developed and still have the same initial advantages over mplayer. You claim using a git snapshot isn't sufficient yet you do so with mplayer's svn repo.
I'm also unsure of what major bugs have been brought to attention. I'd like some elaboration, especially in the case that I continue to use the AUR package.

I think you should ask on the ML.
I've also read it's still being developed http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n … px=MTA0NjQ

Not much point bringing it up on the mailing list... no-one wants to maintain it so it is not in the repos.

At least for me that wasn't evident.
I'm fine with the package being dropped to the AUR and I understand that the mplayer2 development has been somewhat disappointing.
