venerable packages for laptop system tray?

I started with just openbox and no DE, then I was playing with LXDE, XFCE and finally, I have KDE on my laptop. I'm having fun but I think I'll return to just openbox as it runs the smoothest on my machine as it's a few years old and wasnt a high end machine to begin with.

I think I'm going to tweak a minimalist setup with no panel but WITH a system tray. I'd like to know from fellow laptop archers which packages they trust to run in the system tray.

I am currently using wicd which has been nothing short of wonderful. However, I'm looking for a decent battery monitor and volume icon/controller. These are the only three things I normally expect of a system tray in a laptop.

Also, while I've got you thinking, one of the things I like about most of the DE's I've played with is that they all seem to have a pretty decent power management/suspend/etc interface and I'm wondering if someone can suggest a nice companion package to install on an openbox only setup which would give me some power management/suspend type of options and configurations. Does KDE's power management and LXDE/gnome/xfce all run off of one particular backend?

You can install pnmixer from AUR to get a nice volume control for your tray. It also supports system wide hotkeys for mute, volume up and volume down.

Check out batti and vattery battery monitors for the tray, they are also in AUR.

I have openbox/fbpanel on my EeePC.

I use ibam (battery monitor) and volumeicon, both from the AUR.

i use tint2 panel and the built in battery monitor with wicd and volumeicon

thank you all! I installed tint2 which is awesome although the battery monitor doesn't seem to work. I mean, I have it checked off but it doesn't show. is there some dependency I missed? also, PNmixer is awesome.

here is my battery section in tint2

You can make it show all the time as mine is now or to only pop on once it hits a certain level.
