well, after i tried to install CalibreOffice, pacman is showing this messages when i try to do 'pacman -Suy' or install any other package 'pacman -S bc', for example
sudo pacman -S bc
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/core.db: Unrecognized archive format
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/extra.db: Unrecognized archive format

Which installation image did you use? What's the output of 'pacman -Q pacman'?

i used core x86_64..
and the output :
pacman -Q pacman
pacman 4.0.1-4

have you tried $ pacman -Syy for re downloading the *.db ?

hello I had the same problem as you ..
I clarify that I am using the google translator because I speak Spanish, and I registered just to tell you how it solved:
delete the folder /var/lib/pacman/sync/
and all its contents
# rm -R /var/lib/pacman/sync/
and then
# pacman -Syuf
anything send me a mail...

tried this but i still get the same problem.
edit - it seems it is repo related. changed mirrorlist around and no more errors.

I experienced same problem today on regular update command and deleting sync folder solved the problem like leonelhermetica told.

@leonelhermetica: You should be really careful about the -f flag. I think in this case you would have accomplished what you wanted with just a -Syyu.
