alsa trouble with snd_ens1371 on a Sound Blaster PCI 128

although i seem to have all of the needed modules loaded i am unable to get so much as a peep out of it

Sound Blaster PCI 128 (CT4740 w/EEPROM)

i first began with alsaconf which gave me this error:

when i try using alsamixer i get this:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

im using udev 060-3 and 2.6.11.10-ARCH

any advice at all would be greatly appreciated!
