I installed 'batti' from AUR to display my battery status.
for some reason, although it loads and reports the battery percentage, it is missing its little icon, showing only a white paper with a red x.
one other icon I noticed missing was for wine. when I right click on an .exe file, the icon is missing for "Wine Windows Program Loader", again , the missing image picture of a white paper with red x.
That one isn't really too much of a bother, but the batti icon really is. Any ideas?

Yupp: Change icon theme or create the icons yourself and add them to the icon theme.
The problem with your missing icons is, that they aren't provided by your icon theme, or, if so, they aren't correctly addressed by your application. Usually icon themes provide a wine-icon and a battery-iconset, you should check for those in the iconset-folder.
It's also interesting to know what DE/WM you're using, cuz afaik all DE's I know provide a battery-app of their own, so there would be no need to use batti.

using LXDE. I'm not aware that there is a batt manager built in. or a power manager for that matter, I was just going to use ACPID and wing it. what do you recommend for an icon set?

I just booted into my LXDE and launched the panel: By right-clicking on the panel and choosing "Panel Settings", you'll get the "Panel Preferences".
In the "Panel Applets"-section you can add a "Battery Monitor". (I assume you are using the standard panel...?)
Recommending an icon theme is hard, since it has to fit the desktop theme and the personal taste...I'd recommend this instead...or browsing deviantArt.com .
