[SOLVED] gnome shell crash on searching - nvidia 295.20-1

Just made update and get issue with searching on gnome shell. Everything is working fine besides searching in activities view. To solve this I temporary downgraded nvidia and nvidia utils packages to previous version (nvidia-290.10-3, nvidia-utils-290.10-1).

pmd@archdesktop:/var/log$ sudo grep gnome messages.log | grep nvidia

Re: [SOLVED] gnome shell crash on searching - nvidia 295.20-1

Hey pmd, i have the same problem but i'm trying to figure out why another machine i use w/ arch is working fine instead: i still have to try out installing linux-ck and see if that solve the issue, i read on these forums that could do it, i'm gonna try it in a couple of hours. Have you already tried that?!

Same issue here, downgrading brings things back to normal, would have to wait for a fix in the nvidia 295.x

Re: [SOLVED] gnome shell crash on searching - nvidia 295.20-1

Quote from the nvnews forum:

It seems to be caused by old cache files in ~/.nv/GLCache .. removing or renaming that directory fixes it.

For me this solved the problem for a moment but a bit later it reappeared.

Re: [SOLVED] gnome shell crash on searching - nvidia 295.20-1

Same bug here, removing/renaming/changing permissions of .nv/GLCache didn't help me though.
I'll try downgrading nvidia soon.

EDIT: as expected, downgrading nvidia packages solve the issue.

Same issues. Remove .nv don't work.

Re: [SOLVED] gnome shell crash on searching - nvidia 295.20-1

I just did this and it seemed to work:

echo "" > ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel

Scornflakes, let us know if that works as a permanent solution. I think someone already tried that, but the bug came back eventually. Try playing a video file, or opening a picture file, and then try to use the Activities search again.

Re: [SOLVED] gnome shell crash on searching - nvidia 295.20-1

It's still not crashing after clearing recently-used.xbel.  Since the update, I'm still having trouble with the laptop not shutting off after halt though I'm not sure if it's related.  I'm on 3.2.6-2 kernel and nvidia 295.20-1.

Re: [SOLVED] gnome shell crash on searching - nvidia 295.20-1

thanks @scornflakes - that fixed it for me

I was pretty sure it was a something like a  "recently used" entry because the crash only occurend when typing certain keys. I could still browse all applications by selecting "applications" via mouse.

No crashes using nvidia 295.20-1 - invalid recently-used.xbel seems to be a separate bug

maybe this is because an invalid entry is being added again to recently-used.xbel ?

Re: [SOLVED] gnome shell crash on searching - nvidia 295.20-1

Clearing recently-used.xbel does not solve problem for me. As soon as a new recent voice is added to file (eg. a single openoffice calc recent file straight after clearing recently-used.xbel), bug appears again and gnome shell crashes on first key of the recent file typed in overview search.

enigmatichus, me and a lot of other people found it that clearing the recently-used.xbel is only a temporary solution

I thought I was the only one.  Hopefully, Nvidia provides a patch in a most expeditious manner...

Re: [SOLVED] gnome shell crash on searching - nvidia 295.20-1

The suggested solution to clear the recently-used.xbel file didn't worked for me, but a workaround is to delete the recently-used.xbel file and create an directory with the same name.

By the way I have the same problem with the laptop not shutting off after halt.

For me deleting recently-used.xbel and recreating it with no content solved the problem just temporary. But instead of creating a equally named directory one could also sudo chattr +i recently-used.xbel to keep the file empty.
Keeping the file empty also significantly speeds up the application launcher for me. so it would be nice to have a way to configure this instead of fixing it that rude way, for folks that dont want or need recently used files.

Holy mother of cow cheese! The applications menus do open at lightning speed now (after creating a recently-used.xbel). Yeah, there definitively should be a way to disable that feature in the configs.. if not already possible.
