The Huge Update Today Caused Pacman to Crash

Pacman crashed during the update of all the packages today, it finished updating it all the files and then it did a Segmentation Fault, so I wonder if there is some type of bug dealing with large amounts of updates in one time period. Anyone else have this problem?

Mine had a similar, didnt crash but wont update coreutils:

I cant do a full pacman -Syu because i wont download all those pkgs i dont need. And if i dont do it that way, seems that this step is not taken:

solutions please?? should i remove with pacman -R sh-utils etc...??

pacman -Sf coreutils or pacman -Syuf

if you have gotten a segfault likely you will get an error about pacman being locked (i got that on my other box). if that is the case you will likely not be able to use rm (as it has been uninstalled) to get rid of the pacman.lck file. so you will have to reboot (and get lots of errors). then pacman -Sf coreutils on reboot. then reboot again.

everything should be ok then you can pacman -Syu like normal.

the only other conflict you may get is with readlink, which is provided by tetex (if you have that installed), both readlinks perform the same function and i have yet to find out if there is any problem for tetex by replacing its readlink with coreutils' readlink.

I got a segfault as well (upgraded coreutils, gcombust, icewm and openoffice). It came last, after upgrading Open Office. Everything appears to be working though.

//Edit: Oh, and I had to rm /tmp/pacman.lck //

don't worry about the segfault, it should be occuring after all the normal pacman stuff, so your packages are still upgraded properly. The segfault is tied to the new replaces code somehow, I'll take a look at it soon.

sud_crow: If you really want to install coreutils without --sysupgrade, you should do it as follows:

# pacman -Rd sh-utils fileutils textutils
# pacman -S coreutils

I noticed the same phenomenon when running pacman -Syu two nights ago, lots of upgrades plus the option to replace sh-utils and one other package with coreutils. Frankly, not knowing the full import of making changes of this kind and working on the principal if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it, I simply elected "no" and pacman finished it's work. There was no freeze or any other negative result. But maybe now is the right time to ask this question: What would have been the advantage of replacing the relevant packages with coreutils anyway? Might someone address that point?

i am just guessing with this ...but coreutils replaces a large number of once separate core utility packages. therefore, for example, when coreutils upgrades you wil get a new sh-utils (or whatever it is called in coreutils) while the person who stuck with the current sh-utils will no longer get any upgrades anymore as this package no longer is a separate package.

this is just a guess as i have not really investigated whether or not sh-utils, etc were actually removed from the repository.

The upgrade worked fine here.

Except at the very end, after it said it was done upgrading everything, it froze.

I did a CTRL-C and all seemed OK(!?).
