LXDE - Wow

This message contains no questions, I just felt like sharing my feelings about the LXDE DE.
I mean, wow. I have this semi-crappy 10,6" laptop with 1g RAM and completely inferior specs, but LXDE blasted up like it was just air.

And I do not say this coming from a heavily bloated DE, I went from Spectrwm (previously Scrotwm) to LXDE. For those of you who are not aware of what Spectrwm/Scrotwm really is; it is an extremely minimalistic, spartan WM. Even so, LXDE as it is right now feels even snappier than Spectrwm! And I mean, Spectrwm is lighter than the shoes of Hermes, so that is quite a bit in comparison.

I must admit, I have only been using LXDE for soon a day, but I am most likely replacing all my laptops WM/DE's with this (I have previously been using Ratpoison, Gnome, KDE, Awesome, Scrotwm, Windowmaker, Openbox, fvwm, XFCE and fluxbox).

Forgive me for acting like a blind fanboy, and feel free to point out the various odd and ends of this DE, as I would like to get a best possible overlook over its strenghts and limitations.

The only limitations are your hardware and your imagination, just add what you are missing.

That's the big advantage of the light DE's (LXDE, Razor-QT) over both other DE's and WindowManagers: It gives you a basic set of applications you can already work with and can be easily rigged up to what you want, especially since both are very modular.

Doesn't LXDE by default run on top of Openbox? I don't see how it could be "faster" or "more lightweight" than Openbox by itself...

Openbox runs within LXDE, but you're somewhat right. It's not faster than a clean Openbox...but who runs an Openbox without building a DE of his own - which then might be less lightweight than LXDE.

I guess so, when I run Openbox I have tint2 and conky running and I use nitrogen to set the wallpaper, but that's about it for a "DE" -- and it still uses more memory and seems more sluggish to me than jwm or scrotwm. Whatever floats your boat I guess. That's the beauty of Linux -- we can all have whatever we want.

No disrespect to LXDE, by the way -- it's what got me into Openbox and the other WMs I use now.

The issue comes when you want all the same funtionality via GUI. You find yourself manually building a setup about as big anyway. So if you're going to build a setup about as big, it's atractive to find a light setup that'll work out of the box. If all you want is a WM to draw your browser window and you do the rest in CLI, than of course Openbox *alone* will be faster.

I, personally, am not a fan of LXDE, but to each their own.

Like I said -- no disrespect to LXDE -- I think it's a well thought-out and put-together package that doesn't get the recognition it deserves. I just don't think it's as awesome as the OP does
