[SOLVED] Synaptics module not loading

Hi,

Recently my synaptics touchpad has stopped working. I ran lsmod and couldn't find any modules for the touchpad.
How would I go about loading the module.

Re: [SOLVED] Synaptics module not loading

I think its most likely to do with udev, even though there hasn't been anything on it documented. You can try downgrading the udev to the version where it worked.

Re: [SOLVED] Synaptics module not loading

hi,
after downgrading udev I can no longer boot.  Have I missed a step? What should I do to fix udev.

EDIT:
I solved the boot issue by chrooting via a live cd first trying to create a new initramfs with mkinitcpio which failed, and then by upgrading udev again, and trying mkinitcpio which worked.

Re: [SOLVED] Synaptics module not loading

Sorry for the trouble. i should have mentiioned when you downgrade udev should sometimes have to downgrade kernel too.

Not that I'm aware of. Recreating the initramfs (mkinitcpio -p linux) yes, but kernel version doesn't matter, as long as it's new enough (at least 2.6.32).

Re: [SOLVED] Synaptics module not loading

The problem is that when I downgrade udev and run mkinicpio I get the error

==> ERROR: Hook 'udev' can not be found.

I think udev and a few other packages were moved to different places on the system recently.
Could that be why udev cannot be found when I downgrade it?

Re: [SOLVED] Synaptics module not loading

Oh, yeah, the udev hook moved from the mkinitcpio package to the udev package. So if you downgrade udev, you're without the hook. You have to downgrade mkinitcpio too.

Then there's the other thing that there's no guarantee udev is actually the problem here.

Re: [SOLVED] Synaptics module not loading

I managed to fix the issue by downgrading the linux kernel from 3.2.8-1 to 3.2.7-1.
I'm not sure if I should file a bug report since downgrading the kernel did fix the issue.

Re: [SOLVED] Synaptics module not loading

I'm sorry, this is an already solved post, but I want to share my experience.

I did an update and got kernel 3.2.8-1, and after that the touchpad on my Dell XPS 15 (L502X) was not working anymore.

I searched and tried many suggestions around the web unsucessfully.

I managed to get touchpad working again after remove synaptics-led package. It's working on kernel 3.2.8-1 and udev 181-2.

Re: [SOLVED] Synaptics module not loading

Thanks a lot. I forgot that installed synaptics-led. Removing that allowed me to update to linux 3.2.8-1.
