Do I need CUPS?

Do I need CUPS and/or HPLIL installed on a laptop that I want to print from on a network printer connected to another computer?

You do need CUPS, at least. If the printer is connected to a Windows Maschine you can print to it without having the linux drivers installed using Samba, otherwhise you also need the drivers.
