[SOLVEDish]Mouse cursor disappearing when hovering over certain things

I posted this in the Archbang forums and everyone seems kinda puzzled about it so I'll try here too.

For some reason my mouse cursor will disappear when hovering over a lot of stuff, and the mouse cursor will just disappear until I move it again, which is extremely annoying as it's hard to see where the mouse is.

A list of things it disappears on:

- Openbox menu

- Google Chrome tabs and hyperlinks (especially while loading pages)

- Flash player (YouTube)

- Tint2 (or near the bottom of the screen in general)

- rxvt-unicode

I have changed my cursor theme to DMZ (black) theme.

It happens regardless of whether or not any compositing effects are on.

I created a new test account to see whether or not it would happen on there (even changing the cursor theme to the same one) and it does not happen on that account!

I can't work out what could be different, there is no difference between my .xinitrc, .Xsession or .gtkrc-2.0 and the same files on the test account.

You don't happen to use the Catalyst proprietary driver, do you? ATI (now AMD) had some very weird-ass issues with this for a very long time, even on Windows!

How do you set up your cursor? Using lxappearance? Post your ~/.icons/default/index.theme before you try it.

I'm not using any proprietary drivers, just (xf86-video-vesa)

I changed it using lxappearance on both the account that isn't affected by the problem and the account that is.

~/.icons/default/index.theme:

# This file is written by LXAppearance. Do not edit.[Icon Theme]
Name=Default
Comment=Default Cursor Theme
Inherits=Vanilla-DMZ-AA

Output of

diff .icons/default/index.theme ../test/.icons/default/index.theme
4c4
< Inherits=Vanilla-DMZ-AA
---
> Inherits=Premium

And ?

Did that solved the problem? ...

I already said, I changed it using lxappearance on both originally, that's how I changed it.

I'm unsure of what you're on about.

The newly created user should have far less configuration files. So if you can't figure out what's different between these accounts, move some of the config files from the old account into the new one and start fresh.

It's probably a permission problem for a file or folder anyway.

How am I supposed to know what to move and change?

No offense but this isn't very helpful...

Re: [SOLVEDish]Mouse cursor disappearing when hovering over certain things

I'm talking about your dot files. From your /home/user/ dir.

.mozilla
.opera
.config/chromium
.config/deluge
.config/transmission
.weechat
.xchat2
.dropbox

etc. etc.

These can't possibly affect the cursor. Get the settings for the programs you use right now and keep the rest for when you need to run the other ones. But hey, it's just a suggestion. I'll gladly fuck off now.

Since when does it do that? Are you running unclutter?

No I'm not running unclutter, it's been doing this since I changed my mouse cursor theme from the default.

Re: [SOLVEDish]Mouse cursor disappearing when hovering over certain things

Maybe this DMZ theme lacks some pointers, like the waiting pointer? Do other themes work correctly?

I'm not a specialist of mouse pointers or LXDE, I'm afraid wink. I do have a Debian install with Lxde, but there's no way to change the mouse pointer theme in there.

I tried it with the Premium mouse cursor theme and it happens with that too.

Also I switched to the DMZ theme on the test account and it worked fine!

Re: [SOLVEDish]Mouse cursor disappearing when hovering over certain things

Out of desperation I've done a recursive diff check of everything in my home and the other account's home and I couldn't see anything.

Now I'm going to copy everything over to the new test account and see if that breaks it.

Re: [SOLVEDish]Mouse cursor disappearing when hovering over certain things

In this process of doing this I accidentally deleted my entire home directory, fuck

EDIT: Turns out only the files without a . in front of were deleted (non hidden files)

UPDATE:

Okay I created a new account and copied ALL files from my home directory to the new account's home directory. I logged in to see if the same problem persisted (to see if it was anything to do with my configuration files) and it didn't happen!

It completely worked. The mouse cursor wasn't disappearing at all, even though the new account had exactly the same home directory files!

I'm completely dumbfounded and confused now! If the home directories are the same, what could possibly be causing this?!

I think I'm just going to give up and make a new user account and use that.

You're sure you included dot files/dirs in your recursive diff, right? I'm asking because something like "ls ~/* -d" doesn't list dot-dirs.

Most definitely, as I definitely remember that .xinitrc was compared

This is really shitty, I'm going to refrain from using Archlinux until I can get a good response to this, I can't figure it out at all.

Re: [SOLVEDish]Mouse cursor disappearing when hovering over certain things

I'm having this problem too in xfce4.
Why is it marked solved... ish...?
Creating a new account to avoid problems is the answer? 0.0
I'm having this problem with the default and added cursors.
Creating a new account worked for an hour or two but now is as bad as my original account.
Also my cursor turns into a box at times about 3/4 inch X 1 inch.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: [SOLVEDish]Mouse cursor disappearing when hovering over certain things

I'm running Debian Wheezy and I had this problem too. I fixed it by going to /usr/share/icons/ and renaming the ONE theme I had (Adwaita) to AdwaitaBLAH (Just a random word to make OpenBox not recognize it.) Hope this helps!!!
