linux/gnu audio... questions

Installation and configuration of the audio packages doesn't seem to bad...
I just have some general questions about them that I havn't been able to find out....
And that's with pulseaudio.. from what I could find is that its basicly a sound proxy between apps and alsa..
And Im just wondering what are the benifits of having  pulseaudio vs. Just alsa
I also read that pulse is a direct replacement for ESD and I'm wondering what makes pulse better.
I'm sorry if this seems like a very basic question... I honestly looked and I really only found installtion guides not detailed information about pluseaudio and why its set up in this way

Re: linux/gnu audio... questions

I thought I could live with just alsa by itself, but I soon realized that there was no easy way of switching between two audio cards on-the-fly. Maybe there is, but now I'm comfortable with using PulseAudio with alsa.
