[SOLVED!] CUPS not finding Brother Laser Printer

Greetings,

So, I was lucky enough to receive a new laser printer, a Brother HL-3075CW, which is great because I do lots of printing. The only problem is, I can't seem to get it working under Arch Linux x64.

I have followed the ArchWiki for CUPS (already have a HP Photosmart Printer).
I have downloaded the ppd file for the HL-3070 (BR3070_2_GPL.ppd) (they don't have one for the 3075) and moved it to the appropriate folder (/usr/share/cups/model)
I have set the permissions as advised by the brother website instructions.
I have installed the foomatic drivers as instructed by https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Brother_HL-2170W.
I also tried to follow those instructions on that page.
I have restarted cupsd many times, and refreshed the CUPS page many times, even closing it and opening it anew.
I have sacrificed 23 black cats.
I have done a rain dance with a silly hat.
I have restarted the printer.
And yes, I am up-to-date on packages.
I have converesed with all mighty google.

Here's the thing, I know the printer works under linux with the hl-3070 ppd file. I know this because I have a laptop running Ubuntu that it works perfectly on, and that is the ppd they used. I just can't seem to get it working right on my desktop, which makes me a sad penguin. So any and all help on htis matter would be greatly appreciated!

Re: [SOLVED!] CUPS not finding Brother Laser Printer

Hmm, I'll give that a try to see if I can't make that work with my printer. Funny how almighty google didn't show me that post.

Re: [SOLVED!] CUPS not finding Brother Laser Printer

Hmm, I'm afraid those directions do not work for this particular printer.

3. Go into ~/usr/local/Brother/Printer/HL2270DW/cupswrapper/cupswrapperHL2270DW-2.0.4 and change all instances of "init.d" to "rc.d".
4. Go into ~/usr/local/Brother/Printer/HL2270DW/inf/setupPrintcap2 and change "printcap.local" to "printcap" -- I think there was only 1 instance of this.

I went into those files and changed them as needed. The problem is that these files don't extract into some sort of "`/usr/local/Brother/Printer/" etc... It seems both 3075 and 3070 (the only two drivers I know of to work with my model) make use of the opt folder.  So....

5. sudo cp -r ~/tmp/usr/* /usr && sudo cp -r ~/tmp/var/* /var

Yeah, I get a "does not exist error" there.

I could not run the cupswrapper "cupswrapperhl3075cw" file. At least it didn't appear to run.... As I am having it hooked up by USB I wasn't worried about the network connection method, but I continued to try to follow the instructions, includding the avahi daemon setup you mention in your post.

Despite these issues with the instructions, the CUPS admin page is showing the printer as installed. However I am still unable to print from it. I will mess around with it a little longer to see if I can figure something out here, but if anyone has any ideas, please do let me know!

Re: [SOLVED!] CUPS not finding Brother Laser Printer

Greetings,

Sorry I haven't replied lately. I've been busy.

I am thinking that the issue is more of the printer not being fully installed correctly than anything, ie, just providing a ppd doesn't seem to be the best or correct route to get the printer working, but I could be wrong. So I'll see if I can't make some sense of this thing they did with their cannon printer to see if it would work for my brother laser jet. It might be the libjpeg error. But for some reason, I kind of doubt it.

Re: [SOLVED!] CUPS not finding Brother Laser Printer

No ideas eh? I don't have any either ATM.

Until then I'll have to use a distro that I know that the printer works in, I have to have a working printer after all. Hopefully we (someone on here or myself) can figure this thing out though soon! It sucks to use anything else except arch just for a printer, when everything else worked flawlessly for me in arch.... Once I can sort this issue, I can return to arch, and that will be a good day indeed.

If I could just figure out how to get the printer and cups to communicate, I'd be in buisness.... I feel it must be something obvious... sadly though, by brain fails me.

Re: [SOLVED!] CUPS not finding Brother Laser Printer

I have read that the foomatic drivers sometimes cause problems.  Try just using the Brother official drivers.

Did you try downloading and installing the drivers from Brother's website for your model printer?
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs … #HL-3075CW

From CUPS, delete any Brother printers that show as being installed, then try installing the Brother Printer drivers as per the following thread.

Re: [SOLVED!] CUPS not finding Brother Laser Printer

Greetings,

Thanks for your responce, unfortunately as indicated in post 3 I have done that. I've tried the circuitry driver using the steps as indicated in your post as best as possible, noting that wasn't completely possible due to the different way this driver is set up.

I've also tried to use the ppd for hl3070, following the cups wiki page and instructions on brothers page and tried the foomatic drivers.

Re: [SOLVED!] CUPS not finding Brother Laser Printer

If the drivers are installed ok, then it is probably that you are using the wrong uri.  Try googling your model printer and linux, and see what uri's others have used successfully.  You can change the uri in CUPS by modifying the printer.

Are you using a network printer or a usb printer?

Usb. I used the uri provided by brothers website.

Re: [SOLVED!] CUPS not finding Brother Laser Printer

A different uri may be needed.  I had to change the uri before with a previous model Brother printer.

Don't know if this is still relevant.

Might need to install a2ps as well.

I have done that black listing like it says to in the thread, not in the array but in the file, but haven't tried a2ps yet. I shall try that first thing in the morning. Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED!] CUPS not finding Brother Laser Printer

Ok, this is getting a wee bit frustrating...

I am still getting "Waiting for printer to become available" despite that the printer is plugged in and on.

Again, this is for the Brother HL-3075cw laser printer.

These are the steps taken thus far, not necessarily in any particular order though:
* I have installed cups, all the cups drivers listed on the cups arch wiki page, followed the cups arch wiki page completely.

* I have installed a2ps.

* Following https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 14#p941614  I removed the blacklist from /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and put it in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf

* I have tried with usblp blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf, both, and neither.

* I have followed the steps listed at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Brother_HL-2030 and https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1007217 as best as possible.
** I say as best as possible because unlike with the HL-2030 driver, the HL-3075cw driver uses opt and user. So I had to modify the instructions to use opt and usr instead what was used in the instructions. However, I was able to get the cupswrapper script to run, which seemingly installed the printer. Please remember: cups is cupsd now!

* Using lpinfo -v, I did not find another URI to use.

[root@norova cupswrapper]# lpinfo -v
network lpd
network beh
network smb
file cups-pdf:/
network socket
network ipps
network https
network ipp
network http
serial serial:/dev/ttyS0?baud=115200
direct hp
direct hpfax
[root@norova cupswrapper]#

* Printer is using the following URI: usb:/dev/usb/lp0

* I have also tried in the past HL-3070 ppd file and foomatic.

So um, yeah.... what else is there I can do/try? Any suggestions? Any files/logs I need to show that might help?

Re: [SOLVED!] CUPS not finding Brother Laser Printer

SOLVED!

Ok, I tried the additional following steps:
* Downgraded "File".
- still not the issue

* Plugged USB cable into another USB port
- Got rid of the "Waiting for printer to become available" nonsense.
- Said it printed test page, it really did not.

* Went through the whole delete printer, reinstall routine. No cigar. However...
- I noticed that CUPS was automatically detecting that the Brother printer was connected, even when not installed by having changed USB port.

* With that, I installed the printer, pointed to my HL-3075cw ppd
- same results "says printed, does not really print".

* Modified that printer, tried the Foomatic HL-3070 driver
! Prints! Looks ugly as crap though...

* Removed a2ps
! Prints! Still, ugly.

*Modified that printer, tried the Brother HL-3070 driver
! Prints! Looks wonderful!

*Upgraded "File"
!Prints! Looks wonderful!

*Tested printing other pages and stuff.
! Works as expected!!!

So yay! Printer issue solved!

For info sake:
The Issue Was: Bad USB port, plus could not use HL-3075cw driver. Brother's HL-3070 driver works fine though!

Thankyou David, for having stuck with me through this and helping me to work it all out. Even if our inital thoughts and ideas didn't work, it was helpful to go through it all, and weed out all of the possibilities.  In the end, it was reading a response in a post (one that stated "Waiting for Printer to become Available") that said something about having a bad connection that led me to the issue.
