I'm pretty sure yeah, at this point it's an issue with the newer kernel.  I managed to get Debian 6 Squeeze installed on that machine (though I had problems booting into it and Grub2 makes me angry), but didn't have any problems with the card on the 2.6.35 kernel with the old .40whatever drivers.  May try Arch again here at some point now that I know it *IS* possible.

And just a clarification, got it working with b43 drivers, not b43 legacy.  Will try it on Arch again at some point in the future.
