GNOME won't start

When I start GDM it just displays.
Oh no! Something has gone wrong.
A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please contact a system administrator
What am I supposed to do? I re installed gnome but the problem still persists.

Re: GNOME won't start

There may be some useful information in your log files which are often found in /var/log/

If there is something there that is confusing you can post it and someone can help you with your specific problem.

Chances are that there is something broken in a config file for gdm or even gnome if that is your DM. If you have no customizations you want to keep you can probably uninstall and remove the configuration files and then reinstall GDM.

But again check the logs first to try and figure out what went wrong.

Re: GNOME won't start

Do you have Dbus as a service?
If not add dbus and gdm on daemons in /etc/rc.conf
Dbus is necessary to GDM and GNOME.

Re: GNOME won't start

If don't want to reboot to see if it works, do /etc/rc.d/dbus (if you are root, if not run with sudo), and xinit /usr/bin/gnome-session.
Should work.

Re: GNOME won't start

DBUS is installed and running. This is a fresh install of arch so no extensions are installed. Tried re installing the whole arch but the same error appears. I don't see any errors in the log files except some javascript errors. What log files should I post here?

Re: GNOME won't start

I had trouble running GNOME with an ATI HD5770 using the ATI driver.  I switched to an Nvidia GTX550 Ti using the Nvidia driver and GNOME 3 stopped crashing over and over.

Re: GNOME won't start

This happened to me before, on another distro, I really never got it working, anyway gdm always confused me, in my opinion, setting up startx is the best choice. Unless it's of vital importance to you.

Re: GNOME won't start

paste /var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log and /var/log/gdm/:0-slave.log

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: GNOME won't start

Yeah, I had it set but I didn't generate them. I thought that arch setup is supposed to generate them. Now it works fine, thanks.
