Screen display broken on switching back to X11 with Alt-F7

Hi,

I did a system upgrade on March 14th and saw no reason not to go through with it.

When afterwards, I came to switch back to my desktop (with Alt-F7) after going to a text console with Ctrl-Alt-F2
I was amazed to see four narrow versions of what I expected, next to each other.
All functionality was gone, but I was able to use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get back to the user console and then Ctrl-C to cancel X, for instance.

Has anyone else had this experience?

I have checked the forums but haven't found any clues yet, and I'm sure it worked ok before the upgrade

I've also reinstalled the system but the problem hasn't gone away
I've pasted the corresponding Xorg.0.log in the hope it may make things clearer.
I'd be grateful fo any suggestions...
