X won't start with an external screen

Since a few days back, I can't start X with my external monitor attached (I start it through kdm). If I detach the monitor before I start my computer, I can later attach it normally. I have integrated Intel HD drivers. Here's the last bit of Xorg.0.log

[    29.946] (EE) intel(0): failed to set mode: Invalid argument
[    29.946]
Fatal server error:
[    29.946] AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

My xorg.conf is just this:

Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "DontZap" "false"
EndSection

Any ideas? Should I file an upstream bug report, and if so, what would be the best place to do so?
