The recent upgrade to Xorg 1.12 causes a fatal server error when I run startx because the X server cannot rename /var/log/X.0.log to /var/log/X.0.log.old (EACCESS). Changnig the permissions on /var/log and the X log files only moves the error to "xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open /dev/tty0" (EACCESS). If I "fix" /dev/tty0, then I get ENOENT for /dev/vc/0.
Here's some system info:

My system is a Gateway netbook with an AMD64 L110 processor and an ATI Radeon X1200 graphics chip. The system has 2GB of main memory, very little graphics memory (128MB?), and no 3D.
Here's what works and what doesn't:
Name Works Does not work
xf86-video-ati 6.14.3-1 6.14.3-2
xf86-video-fbdev 0.4.2-5 0.4.2-6
xf86-video-vesa 2.3.0-7 2.3.0-8
xorg-server 1.11.3-1 1.12.0-1
Any suggestions on how to get the latest Xorg release working? I'm willing to make more information available, or to do some experiments.

Is the last line in your Xorg.0.log
(--) using VT number 7
? This is where mine got to but X didn't stop running, it just left the screen perpetually black. Do we have the same error?

Great things come in tar.xz packages.

No, my X log file did not end as yours did and in my case, X does not simply hang, it exits but does not release the screen so neither the mouse nor the keyboard work. I have to reboot to recover.

Thanks for the pointers. I've gone through the downgrade-upgrade cycle several times to narrow the parts of 1.12 that don't work for me. Of the three video drivers (ati, vesa, fbdev) and the X server, only the X server has a version bump. The others look like mere re-compilations.
Unfortunately xorg-server isn't packaged with a ChangeLog, so I can't look at what's changed.

Yeah, when a new X server comes out all xf86-* drivers need to be recompiled against its ABI. So unless one of those drivers coincidentally receives a new upstream release exactly when the X server does, Arch users don't have to worry about them being the culprit.
