Hi All
I have a desktop that i'm wanting to install arch onto, which currently has windows 7. It has a Gigabyte GA-Z68P-DS3 Motherboard, Nvidia GeForce 550Ti Graphics Card, Atheros AR922X Wireless Card etc ... Now when i insert any linux distro and reboot, everything starts fine, i get a splash screen and then everything goes blank. NO gui or CLI at all ... I tried to do a net-install of arch but it complained about dhcpd errors when trying to connect via ethernet to the router ...
Any suggestions please ?
Many Thanks

Manually configure your network instead of using dhcp and then install Arch.

Yes i will try that when i am at home later. But what i find strange is that i cant install ANY Linux Distro LiveCD ... Nothing will run let alone install ...

You probably have issues becoz you have older live images which doesn't support your graphics card. Try some recent versions of Live CD or DVDs.
As for as Arch, do as Awebb suggested.

@hadrons123
All the live images were downloaded over the last couple of days, and so are up to date

What were they ?

You may have to disable KMS by appending 'nomodeset' to the kernel line.

Ok well i have just tried to install opensuse 12.1 with the option of safe mode and the installer continued as normal. So it looks like its to do with my graphics card, although so far opensuse is the ONLY distro to work. Will connect my unit to the tv via hdmi tomorrow and see if anything will install then.
Cheers

What errors exactly did you get when you tried to install Arch?

I had the same issue when trying out various distros recently with an ATI graphics card. The above worked suggestion worked.

Having plugged my unit into the tv via hdmi connected to the motherboard, arch seems to be installing just fine now. Weird really, but hey its all good

Oh, so you need to turn the onboard HDMI off, because it somehow confuses KMS.
Don't forget to mark the thread as solved.

No luck, it still chokes with the Nvidia Card/Drivers ... So for now i've left my desktop and will look at it in the week ... So frustrating haha

Are you saying that you cannot even complete a base install of Arch? That is, just the bare cli setup? Or are you trying to select video drivers etc. during the initial installation? If so, try installing the bare minimum initially - no X, video drivers etc. - and see if you can at least get a working base system in place before you have to worry about X etc.

I can get arch base to install ok. X-Server installs ok, but when it comes to Nvidia, on reboot i get a blank screen, no prompt or anything. I installed Nvidia drivers from the repo, but no joy.

Did you do this?

Not when i installed arch no, not sure how to either .... I did do that when i tried a test install of openSuse but still had problems with the Nvidia drivers

Have you tried Nouveau?
But this is a different issue, unrelated to "installing ANY versions of Linux".
Edit: You press the "e" key (at the GRUB Legacy / GRUB 2 menu) and add "nomodeset" to the 'kernel" line (also known as "linux").
