[Solved]Checkerboards in VLC, and when opening any application...

So, I've got a rather strange problem...

When playing a video in fullscreen using VLC, and there are lots of movements, checkerboards will flash. Not enough to make it unwatchable, but still annoying. This also happens if I open, let's say Firefox. Here, it's almost unnoticable, but if I spam it, it becomes obvious it's there.

Some information:
I'm using Xfce4. (I first thought it was the WM's problem, so I tried metacity, but the was no difference)
GPU: GTX 460
CPU: i5 2500k

So, as you can see, my HW isn't the problem. To note though, is that there aren't any checkerboards when playing i windowed, which I find rather strange. Although this was playing a low quality .avi.

Any help is appreciated smile

Edit:
Eh, can't access any videos right now, but god I feel stupid...
Seems I hadn't disabled composting, might work now, will check later, and if it doens't I'll bump it.

Re: [Solved]Checkerboards in VLC, and when opening any application...

Supposing you are using the proprietary nvidia driver, the tearing you get is normal.

Xfce + compositing (xfwm4) = checkerboard tearing on both desktop and videos
Xfce without compositing = no tearing on videos but on desktop

If you want to get rid of the tearing completely you can either use Xfce + compiz or a gnome3 based DE with some specific options.

Yea, posted this earlier, then proceeded to create another thread (dunno why really, but I did!).

Anyway, your solution worked, and I'm really, really thankful smile

@nanah:  Welcome to Arch.  If this is solved, please edit your first post and add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the thread title.
Thanks.
