[solved] Why does deleting files not free up disk space

I can't seem to recover disk space after deleting files from thunar.

df -h shows no change in free space

if I visit the directory from a terminal and ls, the deleted files appear to have been removed.

EDIT:  just emptied trash with

rm -rf ~/.local/share/Trash/files

Thunar puts deleted files in a "trash" directory if I'm not mistaken. Try emptying that to truly delete the files.

Are you deleting them permanently or sending them to the trash?

edit: Sorry, I should have refreshed the page before posting, as others said "~/.local/share/Trash/".
