Install media graphics issue

So, a while back I upgraded to what was then the latest Nvidia driver for my system (a Dell E1505 with the Nvidia 7300go), which, it turns out, is completely nonfunctional on that card. In my attempts at rescuing my laptop, I seem to have successfully made things worse and now have something completely unusable. I am fairly sure I can undo whatever I did if I can get the installation media to boot, which is where the problem arises.

Based on how my attempts at using the nouveau driver have gone in the past, I'm assuming that's what the installation cd is attempting to use when it boots. The console text shows up through the kernel loading procedure, but as soon as the modules start loading, my screen blanks and I am treated to a rainbow of vertical bars on screen. Since the bars change as I type, I know the system is still responsive. I'm not really sure how to proceed from here. If I could get the install disc to just use framebuffer or whatever it uses during the first part of the boot process, then I'd be fine since I just need console access to install the proper packages. Unfortunately, I haven't the slightest idea how to do this, so, if anyone has any advice, it would be really appreciated.

I realize that I haven't provided much info, but I'm not really sure what is relevant, and the text I get doesn't stay on the screen long enough to copy it down before the screen blanks. That said, if some other info would be helpful, let me know and I'll do my best to provide it. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Install media graphics issue

If the non-working nvidia driver was 290.10, it had a known bug with mobile 6/7 cards. The bug is fixed in 295.20, so you could go with nvidia again.

As for your issues with nouveau... You can prevent a module from loading at the grub command-line: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bl … and_line_2
