I have an elderly Dell Dimension 3000 (dual-core p4), which uses on-board Intel i865 graphics. The system is regularly fully updated.
I am having increasing trouble with certain graphics-intensive applicaions. I have Stellarium and Google-Earth installed. Stellarium has stopped working completely (seg faults on boot) and G-E fails to work correctly. Both work if I disable DRI as described in my other post here but with very slow, "clunky" graphics.
I don't use these applications regularly, so I don't know whether their failure corresponds to a particular upgrade, but I'm guessing that the video drivers no longer fully support the i865 graphics chip set. I have tried upgrading Stellarium and G-E to the latest versions, but it has made no difference.
This is very frustrating, since my machine performs extremely well in all other aspects.
I would really appreciate some advice on this problem.
In particular:
(1) Are my assumptions about the graphics drivers correct, or is there some other cause.
(2) Should I downgrade the video drivers and "lock" them using IgnorePkg in rc.conf. If so, exactly which packages should be downgraded (e.g. xf86-video-intel?, intel-dri? any others?). I don't want to wreck the whole installation!!
