Hey, another aussie, welcome!
I use another ide, it works along with vim, and does an awesome job, http://pida.berlios.de
and if you find vim hard to use, there's options to turn it into a standard 'easy to use' text editor like any other.

I can start it here. Are you using the qt from testing? If so, try with the one in extra.

I know I saw extra cited for eric; I can't swear that was used for qt.

What version of qt are you using (pacman -Q qt)? I have 3.3.4-8 .
You can also try to rebuild pyqt with abs.
BTW, I am using kdebindings instead of the pyqt and sip packages.

It works fine here with qt 3.3.4-9.
Oh, and I'm also using kdebindings.
