Ctrl + Alt + F1/F2/F3.. not working (blank screen)

Hi
I have noticed very weird behaviour. Booting arch and after couple of minutes I am not able to switch to console when I press CTRL+ALT+F1 or F2 or F3. The screen is not even blank it is disabled (no backlight). I can only enter CTRL+ALT+F1 after the arch is booted for one minute or less. If I wait longer, it is not possible any more.

Laptop M1530
nvidia 8600M GT (proprietary driver)
3.2.13-1-ARCH
XFCE

System is up to date.

Re: Ctrl + Alt + F1/F2/F3.. not working (blank screen)

Same happens to me today and I'm not sure why.

GPU nVidia 8500 GT, proprietary diver, up-to-date system. Maybe it's a kernel regression.

Re: Ctrl + Alt + F1/F2/F3.. not working (blank screen)

Sometimes with Nvidia, if you have vga=xxx at the kernel line it might mess things up with tty's. It did for me and prop. drivers, the console was there but I had to drive while blind.

Re: Ctrl + Alt + F1/F2/F3.. not working (blank screen)

@swanson, you are probably right, I have removed vga=865 from grub. It looks like it solved the problem, but I need high resolution in console. Without vga=865 it is very low and unacceptable sad

I use uvesafb for that - works perfectly with my nvidia card (proprietary driver)  on my 1680x1050 display...

Re: Ctrl + Alt + F1/F2/F3.. not working (blank screen)

Ok, I think it works ok, I changed from vga=865 to vga=0x360. It looks like it is now working perfectly.

=EDIT=
NOPE, problem still exists. I've even tried uvesafb....and the result is the same. sad WTF ?

Re: Ctrl + Alt + F1/F2/F3.. not working (blank screen)

To get uvesafb working you need some magic with initrd image I think; like this; http://blog.samat.org/comment/17522

EDIT; it's for debian but the principles should be the same.

EDIT #2; first stop for wisdom, the Arch wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Uvesafb , of course!

No: you just need to follow the guide in the wiki. It works.

I did read the wiki, but as I said the result is the same. After couple of minutes problems comes back.

Re: Ctrl + Alt + F1/F2/F3.. not working (blank screen)

Which DM you have been using? I was confronted with a very strange behaviour of temporary frozen desktop when used LXDM. WM doesn't matter, the problem was present in any WM session... I also found a mess between eth0 and wlan0 net connetions when activated simultaneously (both accepted in nm-applet). All the troubles faded after a change LXDM by Slim... But this can be specific for me and my configuration...

Yes, I'm using slim too (svn version) and it's ok here. Although X is on tty4 since I disabled ttys 4-6.

After couple of minutes problems comes back.

This is weird! What does your inittab look like? Could nouveau or nvidiafb be involved? Screensaver (DPMS)? Could a check of processes and loaded modules (lsmod) give anything? Just rambling ...

I'm using gdm-old 2.20.11-1, I'l try to change it with another one, maybe that's the problem.

=EDIT=
Changed to SLIM, the problem was not solved. I guess it is kernel related issue.

I see. Well then, we are up to nvidia developers. Rome was build faster then nvidia fixes bugs in drivers....

Re: Ctrl + Alt + F1/F2/F3.. not working (blank screen)

Try to disable DPMS by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf and adding

Option "DPMS" "false"

to the Monitor and Device sections. It will disable turning off your monitor after a preset time, but you can use this command to turn off the monitor:

xset dpms off

if you have the package xorg-xset installed.

For example, this is a part of my xorg.conf:

...

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    Option "NoLogo" "true"
    Option "DPMS" "false"
    Option "RandRRotation" "true"
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "ServerLayout0"
    Option "BlankTime" "0"
    Option "StandbyTime" "0"
    Option "SuspendTime" "0"
    Option "OffTime" "0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
    EndSubSection
EndSection

...

Tweak these settings as you wish.

@bjornoslav, it is not related to dpms. It's a nvidia driver bug. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=136751, post #15.

Re: Ctrl + Alt + F1/F2/F3.. not working (blank screen)

Sorry, I had a similar problem with upgrade, but on a PC with GeForce 8500GT, solved by updating everything and renaming xorg.conf to xorg.conf.old and running nvidia-xconfig as root.
