Kernel update crashed boot

Hello,

I've done a full system update Arch doesn't boot any more. The following error message is shown:

ERROR: device `` not found. Skipping fsck.
ERROR: unable to find root device ``
You are being dropped to a recovery shell.

Searching around, I've found that this was a kernel update issue and I should boot from a live CD and do:

# mount /dev/sda8 /mnt
# mount /dev/sda7 /mnt/boot
# mount -t proc /proc /mnt/proc
# mount -t sysfs /sys /mnt/sys
# mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
# chroot /mnt /bin/bash

Done that, I should run:

# mkinitcpio -p linux

But this command returns me an error when autodetec hook is reached:

-> Parsing hook: [autodetect]
findmnt: /lib64/libmount.so.1: version `MOUNT_2.20` not found (required by findmnt)
==> ERROR: failed to detec root filesystem
findmnt: /lib64/libmount.so.1: version `MOUNT_2.20` not found (required by findmnt)

And I couldn't solve the problem. Usually I don't post questions because I always find solutions searching, but at this time I've spend half of a day without progress.
Could someone give me a hint, please?

Try doublechecking your bootloader config (correct root partition listed,...) and reinstall the bootloader to wherever you have it installed (MBR,...).

I'm going to check that, latter I post if it worked.

Just an update: I quit trying to solve the findmnt problem and commented out the autodetect option from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
Once I've done that, mkinitcpio runned just fine, but unfortunately the problem is still unsolved.

The complete output error from boot is:

I don't know what you've done, but you've broken something really hard.

Arch doesn't use /lib64.

At no point should the initramfs lose track of the "root" variable, but I figure this is collateral damage from everything else that's broken.

Now go compare that to a distro like Fedora or Ubuntu. The only reason those symlinks exist are for third party binary blobs where the interpreter is /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2. Rather than change the hardcoded interpreter, we add the symlinks. An Arch install running solely on in-house compiled software does not need /lib64.

I'm using 2011.08.19 x86_64 netinstall live CD. It is still the current version in Arch site I think.

Another update:
I checked Gub configuration and everything looked fine, but I uninstalled Grub 0.97 and installed/configured Grub2 and rerun mkinitcpio just in case. No success.
So I tried to reinstall udev and mkinitcpio and the following message was shown:

warning: could not get filesystem information for /bootmnt: No such file or directory
warning: could not get filesystem information for /cowspace: No such file or directory
warning: could not get filesystem information for /sfs/root-image: No such file or directory
warning: could not get filesystem information for /sfs/lib-modules: No such file or directory
warning: could not get filesystem information for /sfs/usr-share: No such file or directory
warning: could not get filesystem information for /bootmnt: No such file or directory

Does this information help figuring out what is going on?

That's a mirror, not a repo. Note the unexpanded "$repo" tag in the URL.

Running 'pacman -Qkq' in a chroot to your install (from the live cd) might be a good place to start.

Do you have a separate /usr partition? The missing libblkid.so from earlier still seems mysterious to me...

No. There are only two partitions for Arch:
sda6 -> swap
sda7 -> /boot
sda8 -> /

I was trying to backup my important stuff and notice that the lib64 problem also has broken mount and blkid (when chrooted). I think this might be the reason why the system can't boot properly.

Sorry for double posting, but once I was unable to find a way to recover my Arch I've decided that would be better to format and reinstall the O.S. than to spend more time trying to fix that.

This is the first time I've faced a problem hard like that with Arch.

I've met such problem too.
I wonder whether it is related with the util-linux package. I have another laptop running arch either, and the laptop upgrades well with linux kernels.
and I can't find /lib/libmount.so.1 file in the well running arch system.
hope someone can help us with this.

I reinstalled my base and base-devel and reinstalled successfully.

I boot my computer with arch iso and run the following command:

# mount /dev/sda8 /mnt
# mount /dev/sda7 /mnt/boot
# mount -t proc /proc /mnt/proc
# mount -t sysfs /sys /mnt/sys
# mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
# pacman --root /mnt --cache /mnt/var/cache/pacman/pkg/ --config /mnt/etc/pacman.conf -S base base-devel

I wonder if it is a grub error

I've actually solved the problem by deleting "libmount.so.1". If you've also got your system messed up due to the recent glibc update, then the following could kill two birds with one stone.

From a chroot environment:

mv /lib /lib.bkp
ln -s /usr/lib /lib
mv /lib64 /lib64.bkp
pacman -S glibc

It should work (at least it did for me), but I can't make promises!

That did not work for me, I still get the error :
mount: /lib/libmount.so.1: version 'MOUNT_2.20' not found (required by mount)
The same for MOUNT_2.21. This error still persists after chroot manual installs of util-linux and glibc. I also reinstalled grub just to be on the safe side. Could it be the util-linux is the wrong package to place the blame on ?

I just had the same issue. I resolved it be reinstalling the distro's util-linux package, in my case, I had to do: sudo yum reinstall util-linux.
