[Solved] Should I change my default install location from root?

Hello all, I recently installed arch, and used the recommended partition sizes in the installer. I have been installing necessary programs, and realized that all of them are going to my 7.4gb root partition. This partition is now getting rather full (~7gb), so I am wondering if I should change pacman's behavior to install to home (ext4) or if I should expand the root partition. A lot of programs that don't necessary need root access (libre, chromium, etc) are being installed to etc.

Thanks!

The word "root" unfortunately has two distinct meanings.  Root access generally refers to UID 0 priviledges - this is entirely different from a root partition.

You can install software somewhere else, but I'd recommend expanding your root partition if needed.

I'm not a fan of the ~7GB default for the root partition in the installer.  This is more than enough for a base install, but if one is to have a DE and a decent amount of software for a full desktop system this can fill up pretty quickly.

Ah, ok. Well being on the root partition grants any program running there root access right?

I'll probably go with expanding then, this seemed like the easier option, but I thought it might be bad form.

Definitely not.  Again, root access (in terms of user permissions) has nothing to do with root partitions.
