[SOLVED] X server segmentation fault after upgrade to 1.12 (nv driver)

Hello!

I have GeForce FX 5200 graphic card and use free nv driver for Xorg. After recent upgrade of xorg-server package to 1.12 (by 'sudo pacman -Syu') X gives segfault. Here the log file.
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.
It is not supported in any way.
Bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.

My temporary solution is to downgrade to xorg-server-1.11.4-1, xorg-server-common-1.11.4-1, xf86-input-evdev-2.6.0-4 and xf86-video-nv-2.1.18-4 packages. But I want to know what goes wrong? FX5200 not supported in xorg 1.12 anymore?
Thanks in advance!

Re: [SOLVED] X server segmentation fault after upgrade to 1.12 (nv driver)

The nv driver needs to be updated to latest git. Though I suggest you switch to nouveau instead.

Re: [SOLVED] X server segmentation fault after upgrade to 1.12 (nv driver)

I have not tried nouveau after upgrade yet. But some time ago I was using nouveau, but 2d performance was very poor for me (especially in web browsers) and I decided to move to nv and have no problems (I don't need 3d in linux at all). 'nv' driver prooved to be faster on my old FX5200. I'll try to jump back to nouveau for tests, but why the latest pacman packages (I mean xf86-video-nv and xorg-server) do not work together well?

Re: [SOLVED] X server segmentation fault after upgrade to 1.12 (nv driver)

Because no one uses nv anymore, so no one noticed that it doesn't actually work.

Re: [SOLVED] X server segmentation fault after upgrade to 1.12 (nv driver)

With nouveau X 1.12 starts without any problem. But it runs terrifically slow in firefox, and I have artifacts in videoplayers (both mplayer and vlc), and so on.. With nv I forgot about these problems, now they returned. For my card nv driver seems to be the only proper solution after proprietary nvidia-173xx no longer supported.
Hope this nv/xorg bug will be fixed in future. May be create a bug report?

Re: [SOLVED] X server segmentation fault after upgrade to 1.12 (nv driver)

Yeah, create a bug report.

Then there's two things: One, you can use nvidia-173xx if you downgrade xorg-server to 1.10. And two, I'm sure the nouveau folks would be interested in hearing your issues. nv is pretty much unmaintained, so getting nouveau working properly on all hardware is quite important.

Re: [SOLVED] X server segmentation fault after upgrade to 1.12 (nv driver)

I'm using nouveau with nvidia fx 5500 and I've noticed some things running slow in firefox (e.g. some web animations or google maps) but they run fine (although not as well as with nvidia-173xx) with e.g. chromium.

Are you using mplayer or e.g. smplayer?

I'm using both, the effect is the same - I've got horizontal stripes when using xv output driver. But it's not even tearing effect, it is something! )) Sync seems to be OK.
As for slow performance you are right chromium is better than firefox, but I feel difference in speed compared with nv driver even while redraw or resize almost any window (thunar filemanager window, for example) on my desktop. And cpu usage by X is greater also. I'm using xcfe 4.8 and xfwm as window manager, but as experiments have shown the effect was independent of window manager. I could guess that font rendering is the bad thing when using xorg with nouveau.

Karol, you have quite a similar card. Are you using the latest (1.12) xserver too? If so, can I ask you to test nv driver to see whether X gives segfault on your hardware too? And could you please send me your xorg config, if it contains something special? Thanks in advance.

Re: [SOLVED] X server segmentation fault after upgrade to 1.12 (nv driver)

I too get a segfault with nv and xorg 1.12. Downgrading to xorg 1.11 lets me use the nv driver just fine - no artifacts when playing video or browsing the web. Google Maps & StreetView (flash plugin) work.

I use no configs, I just had to blacklist nouveau, otherwise it got autoloaded:

[karol@black ~]$ ls /etc/X11
xinit xorg.conf.d
[karol@black ~]$ ls /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
10-evdev.conf 10-quirks.conf

These are just the stock files that come with xorg-server.

Re: [SOLVED] X server segmentation fault after upgrade to 1.12 (nv driver)

I've just found the report on bug tracker named < FS#29079 - [xf86-video-*] Git patches need updating >
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/29079
May be it's just the same problem. I'll try to test git version of xf86-video-nv soon.

Git version of xf86-video-nv is just fine. So it's my choice until they fix main repository version. Nouveau seems to be too raw for me.
Thanks to all for help in finding the origin of the bug!

Can you please test the just released xf86-video-nv 2.1.18-6?
It fixed the segfault I previously got with xorg 1.12 - it's working fine now.
