X.Org: No screens found

Hello,

I've been following Beginners guide to set up Arch on my laptop. The installation went fine but I cannot get X to start.
When I get to testing X with twm I get an error when executing 'startx'.

Here's my XOrg.0.log:

[    60.412]
This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.
It is not supported in any way.
Bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
Select the "xorg" product for bugs you find in this release.
Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions please check the

EndSection

I've tried using the other display driver (nvidia), but that didn't help.
Any idea how to fix this?

Running arch is like raising a puppy - if you spend a bit of time with it each day and do just a bit of training you'll end up with the most loyal partner you could want; if you lock it in a room and don't check on if for several days, it'll tear apart your stuff and poop everywhere.

Re: X.Org: No screens found

Have you tried without 10-monitor.conf? X should find everything automatically and it usually seems to work better that way unless you really need some special set up.

That's what I thought at first, but it's recommended to manually set display settings when using nouveau. At least Xorg wiki says so. Still might be worth a shot without it.

Err, since when? Well, not your fault, you were just following the wiki. The wiki where I've seen more than once that people completely unnecessarily make things complicated for themselves.

About your issue... By now I would've expected that Optimus issues with Linux are common knowledge.

NVidia Geforce 610M.

I've retried starting it with the vesa driver, which did work to some extent.
I can get twm or Xfce to run but about 1/5 part of the desktop is outside the screen and there's a black strip at the bottom of the screen.
I also can't get it to run in my monitor's native resolution (1600x900). Changing it in the config file doesn't do anything, and it only shows 800x600 and 1024x800 in the monitor configuration of Xfce.

Just tried this and it worked! Xfce starts with the proper resolution and positioning.
Thanks!

Yes, I was blindly following the wiki in this particular case, because I am completely oblivious to the nouveau - config files connection. I just don't know, which is why I referred to the wiki, and I stand corrected. You, on the other hand, probably have deeper knowledge of the matter, and still now (several hours later) the wiki still isn't corrected. Sorry, I don't mean to flame or anything, but being part of the community, contributing helpful posts on forums, having the necessary knowledge and yet slandering the wiki instead of correcting it isn't very helpful in my eyes.

(no sarcasm here, I mean it with all respect)

Several hours? Good grief! How dare people fail to respond immediately? You just can't get the service these days, can you?

So you wrote this having a go at people who were trying to help you rather than correcting the wiki yourself? Very useful.

You do realise, I suppose, that nobody here is paid to help you or to maintain Arch or to write and revise the wiki? That some of us might have even dared to be in work or with our families or occupied in any of a myriad of alternative ways rather than watching the forums so we could spring into action at your word?

Read again please if you want to, you probably misunderstood my point. I merely pointed out that correcting the information itself for good would be more useful than saying that the information is wrong in one specific thread, even more so when it's a matter of deleting one line. I obviously won't do that myself, because unlike Gusar I have absolutely no idea why is it wrong, I have nothing to back it up with. I still don't feel that I crossed the line there, tried to keep it as respectful as I could, sorry if anyone feels the other way, epsecially himself, I didn't mean any harm.

As for your sarcasm, was that really necessary? Just a rhetoric question, I'm not coming back to see if there's any reply, because as you said yourself, I have better things to do.

Re: X.Org: No screens found

I see the related wikipage has been updated in the meanwhile indicating that using 10-monitor.conf is optional in some situations. As a general note (to everyone); try to make sure you have an account on the wiki; so when you spot something that's incorrect/incomplete, you can correct it yourself. That's what contributing to the community is all about.

To the op:

Glad to hear this resolved your issue. Don't forget to mark your thread as [SOLVED].
