Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

Hello,

I have had an issue in the past weeks, when Xorg starts my mouse is not recognized, but if I unplug it and replug it right away it works.
I am not sure why.

The keyboard does not have this issue.
Both of them are USB on the front of my PC.
Xorg autostart and I use systemd.
Not sure where to look in...
Thanks!

Logitech USB Receiver id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]

You appear to be using wireless devices.
Do they share the same receiver ?

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

No, the keyboard is using a bluetooth logitech receiver while the mouse has the "unified" logitech receiver.

This issue has only been happening "recently", but not sure why...

Thank you!

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

Hi gee,

I am having the same issue, but I noticed that my built-in keyboard and touchpad also do not work on Xorg start.  Like you, when I unplug the USB mouse and USB receiver (for the keyboard), both the keyboard and mouse work (the external ones).

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

Hi Walter,

is this also a recent event for you or has it been like that for a long time?

Just an idea I had, but maybe the kernel takes too long to detect the mouse and xorg starts before ?

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

Hi all,
I'm facing to the simillar issue after last update but unpluging is not workaround for me.
Unfortunately I haven't updated before for 14 days, so there was kernel, KDE and xf86-input-synaptics in the updates.

my /var/log/Xorg.0.log ends with:

(II) config/udev: Adding input device USB Optical Mouse (/dev/input/mouse0)
(II) No input driver specified, ignoring this device.

gee: I've tried to disable start of kde in /etc/rc.conf and start it later (15 mins or so) but it also hangs the X

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

well there is no /dev/input/event* on the machine. there is just /dev/input/{mice,mouse0}
the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf is looking just for event* devices so this could be the problem.

I've tried to downgrade kernel back to 3.3.2 (it was in /var/cache/pacman) and that's workaround for me.

But definitely there is something weird in the 3.3.4...

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

Hi gee,

Yes, but I'm not sure if it is because I built a system from scratch using my modified ArchISO build scripts.  The system I was running before then 4/27 was running fine as is another system I am running that was built from an image several months back.

On a side note, I noticed that I have a few problems with the latest packages in AUR such as pam_mount, hxtools, etc.  I haven't had time to go through the entire list, but I was thinking that perhaps I missed something else.  The other odd thing with that machine is gnome 3 / gdm 3 do not detect my soundcard; however, if I use alsamixer, I can control the sound card there.

I see the same Xorg messages as nejsem.

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

Hi walter,
are there any /dev/input/event* devices on your system? If they aren't, could you try older kernel 3.3.3 or 3.3.2 (I suppose you have the newest one - 3.3.4)

Hi nejsem,

I am not presently in front of that machine, but I will check when I am again.

Hi nejsem,

The event nodes look like they're there after I ssh into the box.

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

Hi,

It looks like it is magically working again with the latest kernel 3.3.6.1 I believe.  I also switched to systemd, so I'm not entirely sure which one did it.

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

It seems to be randomized to me so I wouldn't call it quit yet.
I had that issue rebooting yesterday but not the day before.
Maybe it only happens when the system starts fast "enough" in X?

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

Hi gee,

Actually to confirm, it is still a problem for me when I don't use systemd.  When I use systemd, it works just fine.  I think it is something in how I configured my system as the image I was using just prior to I re-imaged worked fine.  I haven't been able to locate the thing that caused the problem though.

I have no idea where to look at though.

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

Gee, one thing i have noticed on my own system :

If i forget to disconnect the computer from power after shutdown, i have the same problem.
A warm reboot also sometimes has this.
Cold boot never gives this problem.

So it may have to do with the initialising of the hardware which sometimes is not complete unless it's  a cold start.

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

I was told that this is most likely a kernel issue and not a xorg one as a cat on the /dev/input/eventX does not produce anything when the issue appears.
Is that the same for you?

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

One logitech developer has found some potential issue in the kernel module and is investigating more.
It seems at this stage he can already get a reproduction of the issue and replies quite quickly, the fix may come out next week!

That's great! Still odd that it works perfectly fine when no keyboard is connected (for me at least).

Re: Mouse not recognized once Xorg start

This is what he sent me:

We are able to reproduce the issue on our side. After plugging/unplugging
several times, I am able to get the same behaviour you observe. This is
good.
We are missing one notification from the Unifying receiver that brings the
information on the paired devices. This seems to be a race condition that
might come from outside hid_logitech_dj module. We need some more time to
investigate that. I will keep looking at that during next week.
