Radeon power management: can't write to /sys/class/drm/card0/device/

I'm trying to enable power management for my Radeon X850 using the open source driver and am failing miserably at it.

The wiki informs me to do this:

# echo dynpm > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method

which results in my computer telling me that I'm a complete and total loser:

bash: /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method: No such file or directory

I don't quite understand the whole "/sys" directory, and I feel like I'm missing something simple. Does anyone have a suggestion on what to do?

That section in the wiki article seems to be a little confusing, as if it's a combination of confusing and outdated instructions. Do I need to use the special [radeon] repository to get power management? What does it mean to "select the methods via sysfs"?

Thank you.
