Absurdly low performance with Intel 82Q35 integrated GPU

So, I just installed Arch on a new machine with a pretty good processor and lots of RAM, and integrated Intel graphics, which I've had a fairly good experience with on Linux. Out of the blue, I get wretched performance.

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

In Kwin, the effects are slick for a few seconds during the start of the session, then suddenly I see tons of dropped frames- the lag is tremendous, even compared to crappy video cards that I've criticized in the past. I have a machine older than this with an Intel GPU and it runs smooth as butter. Even the pre-2006 Intels are more performant. The problem persists in GNOME-Shell, and on Kubuntu 11.10. This leads me to believe it may be an issue with the Intel drivers. However, I don't know what settings could possibly make a difference with this being so bad. Does anyone know what may be the issue?

Even without compositing on, you can see tearing as you move windows. I do have a fairly large screen & resolution (1920x1080), but the problem is just as bad at lower resolutions. Any suggestions and help in finding a solution would be helpful for me and certainly to others in the future. This computer came with Windows Vista and it could handle that craptastic Aero like it was nothing. I hate to see it struggling with Mutter.

Re: Absurdly low performance with Intel 82Q35 integrated GPU

Yes, I had. Unfortunately, there was a mixup when I got this computer, and the replacement doesn't have the same graphics chip. Thank you for taking time to answer my inquiry- perhaps if someone else has the same issue in the following week they could hijack the thread.

Otherwise, I'll title it [CLOSED], or ask a mod to close it.
