Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

Hey,

I just upgraded using the

pacman -Syu

command and Gnome got upgraded to 3.4.1 (along with gnome-shell and other packages).

The problem is none of the extensions seem to be working. The 'switch' under gnome-tweak-tool is disabled or greyed out. I tried editing the metadata.json files for the extensions and replaced the gnome-shell version number by 3.4.1, but it didn't help for most of the important ones.

I've managed to get the user-theme extension working, but several others like the Battery Icon Percentage Indicator and the Media Player Extension are still unusable.

Is this a common problem? Will the extensions be updated on the website soon?

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

You're supposed to be using extensions.gnome.org to get your extensions, not the repos.

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

Same problem here, and I'm used to go by the extensions.gnome.org website. Some extensions here work, some don't. Especially, when installing user theme extension I get an error and it does not install. Same goes for system-monitor. Is it arch dependant or are the extensions not entirely compatible yet, despite the 3.4 tag?

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

I'm using the extensions from the extensions.gnome.org website. The website even told me my version of Gnome Shell was too old or something like that yikes.

I believe they need to be updated to work with Gnome 3.4, am I right?

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

I solved this problem by uninstalling gnome shell user theme extension with pacman (it was in the repos but not anymore) and then reinstall it from extensions.gnome.org. now everything works fine. Some extensions are incompatible with 3.4 but that's expected.

Yeah, that's exactly what I did, and still get an error on extensions.gnome.org... Looking Glass sais there is an error to convert utf-8 strings to JS strings, which I don't understand.

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

apart from this I always delete all the gnome configuration files before updating to a newer version. you can try by creating a new username and testing extensions with it.

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

None of the 13 extensions I have installed (from extensions.gnome.org) are working now, after updating to 3.4. They all appear grayed out and are labeled "OUTDATED" on the gnome extensions page. Regarding cb951303's comment: I do not have the gnome shell user theme installed.

Same here, I'm waiting for User Themes to be updated so I can use Holo theme again.  My Arch doesn't look good right now smile

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

We probably have to wait for the respective authors to update their extensions for GNOEM 3.4 compatibility.

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

I did like cb951303 (deleting old settings, using new account), user-theme installs fine from extensions.gnome.org, however gnome-tweak-tool says it is incorrectly installed. And system-monitor does not install at all (same error on the web page). The comments on the website say that it usually works for them, so I'm more suspecting a packaging problem from arch rather than not compatible extensions.

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

I've got a few fixes:

1. For the user theme, overlay-icons and places-menu extensions, you can simply edit the metadata.json file and change the Gnome Shell version to 3.4. Restart the Gnome Shell (Alt+F2 and r) and they should be back.

2. Media Player extension can be downloaded from the aur, or visit the git page and download the source files. Compiling it is an easy process, and you should have it back in no time.

I think there's a gnome-shell-extension-user-theme-git in the aur which is compatible with Gnome 3.4. Many of the extensions in the AUR seem to have been updated for Gnome 3.4; I can't say the same about the extensions.gnome.org website though.

EDIT : There is one bug that I've found : When I hold down the left mouse button and drag, it creates a white opaque box for multi-selecting items. Ideally, it used to show a semi-transparent box with slight hinting based on the Gtk theme. Does anyone else have this problem? I've attached a screenshot:

Paanini: How's the program called for doing this underlined time / date string on your desktop? I was looking for something like that but cant figure out what to google.

And when you're at it. How's the thing on the right called?

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

They're two separate conky scripts, and the semi-circular pattern on the right is made using lua widgets. smile

Any progress on the opaque white multi-select box?

somehow for me, after reinstalling the user theme extension everything seems to work fine except some out-of-date extensions like "show desktop"

I second that. For me a restart did the trick (restarting gdm/X was not enough).

Here you go smile http://minus.com/lod7OSt2wdh2F

There are 3 conky scripts and 2 lua scripts, one each for drawing the clock and the semi-circular system monitors.

Also, the problem with that white box was theme-specific and not related to gnome-shell. I encountered that problem only when using the Elementary Gtk 3.1 theme, not with Zukitwo.

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

Still same issue here!! It's driving me crazy!

I have gnome 3.4 installed on both my pc and my girlfriend one. On mine it works fine, on her extension.gnome.org is doing nothing. Click on the switch and nothing. This is happening after the upgrade 3.2->3.4 and I don't know where to search more!! Extension have been dropped from anywhere else mad

On my pc extension.gnome.org is working also with chromium, on her chromium complies about a missign plugin: "Gnome Shell Integration". I can see this plugin is present on her firefox, but no way to get any extension.

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

After the upgrade to gnome 3.6 things did not change.

On my first pc everything is fine, but on the second the extensions don't get installed from the site (on off switch moves but anything happens). I need to install them on the first pc and then move to the second.

That's really weird sad

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

Same thing here since 3.6 upgrade.
I click on the switch and nothing happen.
I searched around google, bugzilla, etc, and didn't found any solution or workaround yet.

here the extension works in chromium, but not in firefox 17.0.1 (also did not work in firefox 17.0 after a downgrade)

Re: Gnome Shell extensions not working after update to 3.4

it is something in my firefox preferences. After deleting them, gnome-shell integration works again. Not solved IMO as far as i don't know what preference it was.
