Very good, and addictive game. They've come far from just another quake mod.

Ok guys, I'm gonna test Freespace 2 tonight or tomorrow. I'll report back if stuff works, or I can tear myself away from the actual game :-D

Been messing around with Doom3 trial version. Looks pretty nice, and gameplay is engrossing, even for my very old hardware. Would love to see it with something like a 6800GT.
I stopped playing wesnoth after about two weeks. I simply could not get any further on any levels without running out of turns. Not interested whatsoever anymore. Call me chickenshit, I guess, but it gets boring after you played the same level a hundred times and you just don't have enough turns to eradicate every enemy.
Freeciv is pretty cool, but it would be awesome if there was a way to implement some little cinematic scenes. I miss that.

However check the manual before the first play:

Heh, dosbox + http://www.the-underdogs.info = more entertainment than you could possibly expend. Unless, of course, you oppose abandonware for whatever reason.

X2, UT2004, NetHack, Slash'EM and all the old Doom Games (That's right: Ultimate Doom, Doom II, TNT: Evilution and Plutonia.). That's all I need for first-quality entertainment.
Todays mistakes are tomorrows catastrophes.

I'm trying to get freespace to work for me but I'm having trouble mounting the game discs. I've downloaded the .bin files from http://www.freespacezone.com/ then using bchunk converted them to .iso files to mount on a loop back device so I can grab the files I need off the cds. The problem I'm having is the .iso files will not mount I get the following error on all 3 discs:
sudo mount -o loop -t iso9660 disc201.iso mount/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop6,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
I would really like to get this game working without having to burn the cds. Any ideas?

Let's see now :
Warcraft 3 - under wine, runs great.
NeverWinter Nights - native.
Crash Bandicoot, Final fantasy 8 and 9, chrono cross and more - Epsxe...
The wierd thing is epsxe runs better on my computer (P-III 733) then mupen64... I allways found it odd

OT: mupen64 has to emulate a more powerful system. N64 should outperform PSX based on the overall hardware specifications.

Angband and crossfire are pretty good. I liked ADOM but it's too bad that the author didn't want to go the open source. That kind of hinders it's possible evolution since it doesn't have millions of dollars in resources behind it. That's kind of the thing about games. Alot of the free ones are great in the old-school kind of way, but it's hard for them to stay alive and well unless they're open in some manner or another.
I used to be a big time PC game junky, but these days I find I have more fun with 2D games. It gets annoying dealing with a 3D camera sometimes and detracts from the fun in some ways. Like I really like games like Champions or Norrath, and Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance etc, but sometimes I think they would have been more fun in 2D. It often seems that many games are 3D for the sake of being 3D and it adds nothing to them in terms of gameplay. If anything it often takes away from them since it means the AI and single player experience usually ends up being skimped on.

If you want a good space sim, I recommend Vendetta Online, http://www.vendetta-online.com/
It's a monthly subscription, but it is native to Windows, Linux and Mac, so it's pretty nice. I recently started playing it, and it's great fun.
Also, the first 8 hours are free, so you can try it out.

vote for dosbox. also scummvm for old lucas arts games.
for some fun with some friends. get yourself a playstation-to-usb adapter, a playstation emulator of your choice or mame and have lot's of fun with beat'em ups and the like. i use an ems usb2 adapter and it works really great. the only problem is, that both gamepads are recognized as one giant gamepad, but as long as the software let's you customize the controls, it's no problem.
for a native linux game, take a look at pogosticker (http://jet.ro/feats). a nice and fun casual game with really good gameplay. not free software, though.

Nobody has mentioned Sid Miers' Aplha Centauri/Alien Conquest... I love this game, it's better than Civ IMHO. There's a native linux version too, but it may be hard to find these days...
Microsoft stole my computer, Linux gave it back.

oh yes, how could i forget! best part of the civ-series untill civ4 came out and storywise still the only real sequel to civ.
i had it last installed on my old box under gentoo, if i remember right the update needs some patching to run under current kernels. i think you have to replace the loki installer in the archive with a recent one.

Old Spiderweb Software games like Exile run as well on Wine as on Windows... Of course, with Spidweb games, half the fun is counting bugs.

Space simulations: Elite, Frontier, Elite 3: First Encounters and newly opened for free use X2.
Turn-based strategies: Civilization, Colonization and IMHO one of the best games ever - Master of Magic.
RTS: Warcraft, Dune 2, C&C.
Action: Duke Nukem 3D, Hexen, Prince of Persia.
