What's your openbox font? It looks really nicely rendered. Are you using infinality font rendering? If so what are your settings?

Sounds to me like you installed it as root? Your user should have a folder ~/.vim/bundle/vim-powerline. Just follow the instructions again from the vim-powerline page as your normal user and it should work fine.
