Hello fellow archers,
So I've recently did a clean reinstall of Arch on my laptop (Vaio Z with hybrid Intel/Nvidia graphics, Nvidia is disabled through BIOS), running Gnome ATM, and noticed video playback (mplayer and vlc) is quite choppy or jumpy with the Intel integrated card, like frames are getting dropped or something.
A month or so ago before reinstalling I did not have this issue. So I'm left wondering what has changed since.
On a side note, I've noticed there have been recent updates to Intel drivers package in Extra and it is currently flagged out of date.
Meanwhile I tried a lot of things and nothing seems to resolve it. Disabling Vsync (followed wiki) solves the choppinesss/dropped frames issue but gives me horizontal tearing. Vaapi, mplayer-vaapi. etc doesn't seem to do much.
I've read a few older topics of people with similar issues, some unresolved.
I'm at a bit of a loss really.

I'm seeing horizontal tearing without Gnome. Fresh install running openbox and current stable intel driver. It should be noted that there is no tearing while running XBMC. Outside of that, it's constant through flash and html5 video. I've been playing with this for a while, can't seem to find a solution.

I use
CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-clipped-redraws:disable-cullingin /etc/environment along with the VLC video player in Fedora 16 Gnome. This works for me.
EDIT: If you are not using Gnome, then running Compiz works to enable v-sync. I use Compiz in Arch XFCE and Mageia KDE.
