I just installed Arch linux (loving it, btw) and have taken interest in xfce (used it previously). I have compositing on, so transparency is not a problem. the real problem is setting a wallpaper. I've tried and tried to no avail. my only thought would be that i need root privileges to do this, but i cannot seem to find the command for this...
if you need any info from me, just let me know!

i have tried setting it there and it doesn't work....
oddly enough, if i try and use nitrogen to change it, it defaults to some other background and then it works...

graysky's method should work. Additionally, you can right click an image in thunar and choose the appropriate menu item.
Also, from the command line for a single monitor setup:
xfconf-query -c xfce4-desktop -l /backdrop/screen0/monitor0/image-path=/path/to/image
I don't think you need quotes on the path, but you might. To see a list of which xfce4 channels xfconf-query controls, use
xfconf-query
Then, to see the options available for a particular channel, use
xfconf-query -c channel -l
.
